Why I’m Doing a No-Buy Month (And What It Really Means)
When people hear “no-buy month,” they often assume it means a no-spend month — but that’s not the case for me. For my family and me, a no-buy month is less about restricting every single dollar and more about spending intentionally on what truly matters.
This month, for example, we’re attending an event at a local farm. There’s an admission fee, and we’ll probably buy food and cut flowers while we’re there. And you know what? I’m not going to feel guilty about that — because to me, this isn’t an unnecessary purchase. It’s an experience that brings us joy, creates memories, and aligns with our values.
For me, a no-buy month isn’t about deprivation. It’s about pressing pause on the constant cycle of purchasing “stuff” and instead making room for the things that truly matter — experiences, connection, and slowing down.
Choosing Experiences Over Things
It’s so easy to get caught up in the highlight reels we see online — the constant shopping hauls, perfectly curated spaces, and endless “must-have” products. But I want to live differently. I want to choose intention over impulse.
I’m not chasing perfection. I’m choosing experiences that matter to my family instead of filling my home with things I don’t need. A farm day with Elena, fresh flowers from the field, sharing food under the sun — those are the purchases that bring us joy. And at the same time, skipping the unnecessary physical products helps us stay on track with our budget and long-term goals.
Redefining Simple Living
When I was younger, “simple” used to be a word people used to describe someone boring or uninteresting. But now, as I approach my 30s, I see simple living in a completely different way.
Simple means peaceful.
Simple means intentional.
Simple means making space for the things — and people — that truly matter.
I want to slow down enough to notice the tiny moments I used to rush past. Like sitting outside and watching a little bee’s butt wiggle as it gathers pollen from a flower 🐝 (yes, very specific, I know 😅). I want to enjoy slow mornings in the home we’ve worked so hard for. I want fewer distractions and more connection.
Spending Intentionally, Living Fully
At the heart of this no-buy month is a simple goal: to realign my spending with my values. I want my money to go toward memories, not clutter. Toward quality time, not comparison.
Because here’s the truth — life isn’t meant to be a constant chase for the next “thing.” It’s about creating space to enjoy the life you’ve already built.
So this month, I’m saying no to unnecessary purchases, but I’m saying yes to what matters most:
• Family experiences 🌿
• Slowing down and enjoying our home 🏡
• Living intentionally, one choice at a time 💛
